Which creator income is taxable
If you receive value for content work — money, products, trips, services — it's taxable income.
- • AdSense / Stream Ads / TikTok Creativity payouts.
- • Sponsorship cash + the retail value of any product or service received.
- • Affiliate commissions (Amazon, ShareASale, partner programs).
- • Patreon, memberships, paid Discords.
- • Merch profit (after COGS + fees).
Creator-specific deductions
Most creators under-deduct because they don't track. Set up a separate business account day one.
- • Cameras, mics, lights, computers (depreciated or Section 179 in US).
- • Editing software, stock music/footage, hosting, plugins.
- • Editor / thumbnail designer / VA payments (1099 / self-billed invoices).
- • Home studio square footage as % of rent + utilities.
- • Travel for shoots and creator events.

Do I owe tax on free products from brands?
Yes, in most jurisdictions any free product or service received in exchange for content has a fair-market value that counts as income. Report the retail price.
Should I form an LLC / Ltd company?
It depends on income and risk. In the US, an LLC alone doesn't change tax — but an S-corp election above ~$70–80k profit can save SE tax. UK creators often go Ltd above ~£40–50k profit. Talk to an accountant.
What if I earn from multiple countries?
You usually pay tax where you're tax-resident. Foreign-earned income may need foreign tax credits or treaty claims (e.g. US W-8BEN for non-US creators on YouTube).
Important: this is not tax advice
Calculations use simplified, current published brackets for United States (2025). US estimates layer the selected state's 2025 income tax rate on top of federal — local city taxes (e.g. NYC, Philadelphia) and progressive within-state brackets are not modelled. They do not account for credits, alternative minimum tax, the Net Investment Income Tax, foreign income, R&D credits, or your personal circumstances. Always confirm with a licensed CPA, chartered accountant, or registered tax agent before filing.
